Ice Harvesting in Sutton, New Hampshire

Each year, as part of it's annual activities, Musterfield Farm in Sutton New Hampshire holds an Annual Ice Day. A few years ago I had an invitation to participate in the Ice Harvest. I was asked to bring one of my old trucks to transport the ice to the nearby Ice House. This annual winter demonstration, usually in January, provides a source for viewing and actually participating in cutting ice much the same as it was done each winter many years ago. Ice was "farmed" each year and was the main product that was used for refrigeration. Homeowners used ice in special "iceboxes" for the same purposes that they use a refrigerator today. Farms and others in the ice business had ice houses where the product was packed in sawdust from local sawmills and then stored. Some farms and dealers then used or sold this commodity to people who needed it throughout the warmer months.

Above is a picture of the ice surface being "scribed" with a horse drawn ice chisel. This procedure is done on the surface of the pond or lake. It makes a groove in the ice which in turn acts as a guide for a motorized saw or for that matter a hand saw, so the ice can be cut into similar sized blocks.
